Now this is just my personal opinion, but I think there is a difference between small, thoughtful gifts and big, expensive (or extravagant) ones. Early on, small, thoughtful gifts are a nice way for a guy to be romantic and show he is interested and chasing.
Flashy, expensive ones however carry a little more weight since the expendature of large sums of money sometimes does carry bigger expectations (such as expectations for sex or whatever in return).
